Denise Flanders is a Hebrew Bible scholar who utilizes literary approaches to illuminate the poetics and ethics of biblical narrative and historiographic texts. She is currently Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Taylor University in Upland, IN (since 2019). She is the author of The Rhetorical Use of Numerals in the Deuteronomistic History: “Saul Has Killed His Thousands, David His Tens of Thousands” (VTSup 191, Brill, released in 2022). Dr. Flanders’ current research includes a book tentatively titled Interpreting Biblical Numbers (Baker Academic, anticipated 2025) and the 1-2 Samuel volume for the commentary series The Bible in God’s World (Cascade, anticipated 2026). Her areas of research interest include: numbers (their rhetorical and literary purposes, text critical questions, their reception, etc), the Deutereonomistic History, the Megilloth, and the various ways these texts engage with modern questions of ethics and justice. Dr. Flanders is passionate about helping students cultivate more robust understandings of the Hebrew Bible and deepening their grasp of its ethical and spiritual relevance for faith and life today.
